13 // Why Memory Destroys Systems

Observation

At first, the assumption was that a system should store knowledge. Storage seemed sensible: knowledge remains available, can be retrieved later, and does not have to emerge again.

But human thinking shows something different. A person does not simply store knowledge. They process it through their current state, perception, experience, and their own way of thinking. Meaning changes. Knowledge can remain and still no longer matter. It can return and suddenly be understood differently. Not everything that once existed remains relevant.

Even within a single encounter, not everything remains in the same form. A conversation produces many thoughts, perspectives, and personal updates. Some remain only for the moment. Others condense into something that may matter later. A person does not necessarily remember every individual piece of content, but often relationships, directions, or meanings that emerged from many impressions.

Time also works differently in human thinking. States emerge, change, and pass. A person does not carry every previous state forward unchanged. Recurring things — a conversation, a thought, an impression — exist in a new context each time. Knowledge does not simply remain static; its meaning changes with the current state.

This made the original assumption more difficult. If a system stores knowledge, the content initially remains available. But how should a system know whether that content still has the same meaning? Whether something has changed? Whether it should still be part of its current processing at all?

The question shifted: not whether a system should have memory, but how a system should deal with what it has once taken in.

Because possessing knowledge and retrieving knowledge is different from recognizing what that knowledge means in a new state.

If a system is not only meant to store, but to continuously process, change, and re-actualize what it knows, another question opens: What from this processing should actually be carried forward — and in what form?

Perhaps that is where the actual difficulty of memory lies.
